11/07 - 12/28
Receptions: 11/08 & 12/13
from 6PM - 9PM
In November 1998, Gallery 57 Underground mounted its first show in
basement space it had renovated in the former Progress Bulletin
building in Pomona. Twenty artist members participated, and eight of
them, plus eight more recent members or alumni will show their work in
"Celebration: The 57 Underground Decennial," at the gallery from
November 7 through December 28, 2008. Among the exhibitors are
painters, sculptors in metal and clay, glass and mixed media artists,
and printmakers.
57 Underground is a nonprofit artists' gallery with a contemporary
focus. Located at 300-C South Thomas Street, Pomona (909) 397-0218,
its hours are noon to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays and noon to 9
p.m. on Second Saturdays. The public is invited to the artists'
receptions on Saturdays, November 8 and December 13, from 6-9 p.m. (no
charge). For more information, consult the gallery's website:
http://www.57underground.com.
Although 57 Underground emerged in Pomona in 1998, it's roots go back
to 1984 when some graduate students at California State University,
Fullerton, launched Gallery 57 in Fullerton for emerging artists. In
1997, members closed the gallery but continued to meet and to show
their work in local venues, and artists from other schools joined the
group.
In 1998, the group responded to the Tessier family's efforts to bring
artists to Pomona to reinvigorate the city's center and moved into
their present space. Since then, the gallery has held monthly or
bimonthly exhibits of work by member and guest artists and annual
shows to introduce the community to artists from the Braille
Institute, Pomona's High School of Arts and Enterprise, California
State University, Fullerton, and the University of California,
Riverside, among other organizations.
